The Neverwinter Nights FAQ
Always Under Construction!!
- What is Neverwinter Nights?
Neverwinter Nights is an AD&D game on America Online, set in the
Forgetten
Realms created by TSR. Unlike most other online D&D games, NWN has a
graphical interface, instead of a text interface.
- Do you need to be on AOL to play Neverwinter Nights?
Yes.
- Do I need to download special software to play or is it optional?
You must download the software from keyword DOWNLOAD GAMES.
- Can NWN be played with AOL for DOS?
Yes, as a matter of fact NWN works very well with AOL for DOS. It is
very fast to get back into the game if you have to reboot your computer
since you don't have to wait to boot up windows and then wait for the aol
software. There are no graphics downloads with PCAOL. However, 14.4
modems will get bumped down to 9600 bps, 28.8 modems will be bumped down
to 19200 bps, and you cannot use aolnet numbers. However, if you are
having problems with WinAOL PCAO may be the way to go (don't ask me why
it's PCAO and not PCAOL). In fact, a NW I spoke to said that he recomends
PCAO to people who are having certain problems. AOL users can get it from
the Geoworks forum by
going here.
You cannot access Neverwinter through DOS anymore, since the
message about the retirement won't come up, so you can't proceed to
the game. Aparently is stopped working with pcaol a few days before
the message anyway.
- Why do I keep getting the message that the gates are blocked?
The game is full, see next question.
- How many people can play at the same time?
They bumped it up from 400 to 500 just in time for the flat rate plan..
However, since the flat rate went
into effect that hasn't been enough. Since 500 is the absolute maximum
the system will allow, it will take an upgrade to fit more people in, and
that doesn't happen often (last time was 1993).
- Why do people keep yelling at me for camping by the gate?
Because fights in front of the gate block the exit from the entire
area, and since most gates are outdoors camping in front of them will
immediately trigger a fight.
- What is a guild and how should I go about joining one?
A guild is a bunch of players that get together to role play and adventure
together. Although guilds say they will train, I don't recomend trying to
join one until you know the basics of the game. Guilds usually have a
requirement that you post in the guild folder at least once in a certain
time period (this has to do with the requirements of staying a guild) so
unless you are prepared to do a lot of role playing don't join a guild.
Oh, and if an ITB or some other evil guild member invites you to the
sewers so they can show you around, don't follow them.
- How come I can't ready my bow?
A bow takes two hands, so you must first unready your shield in
addition
to your weapon.
- OK, I readied my bow and it won't let me shoot!
You must have arrows readied.
- But I do have arrows ready!
The target must be in line of sight, and you cannot be standing
next
to
any npc.
- How come I can't find the monsters that were here before?
Some fights are just random. Some fights only appear when it's dark out.
Some when it's light out.
Some fights are set, and must be reset after they are fought. There are
many differnt ways of resetting a fight, depending on a fight. Some are
reset with someone moving onto them with an odd clock, and are trigged
when someone moves onto them with an even one (this is why at the drac
fights everyone asks everyone else what time they have), or vice versa.
Some can be reset by leaving the area and returning, and some can be reset
by QTSing and re-entering the game, but now that the game is full all the
time it isn't really an option.
- What time is dawn/dusk in Neverwinter?
6:00 and 20:00.
- Where do I get those magical things I see everybody walking
around with?
The more advanced the fight, the more likely you are to get good stuff
(this can be measured in terms of XP the fight gives). Dracs are usually
good for magical items, but they are usually crowded. Some magical items
can be bought in stores in Westbridge and Red Larch. Lord Nasher also
gives out magical items for bringing him "Nasher Items" (what
you get for finishing a quest), the harder the quest the better the item.
Bringing him a button from the Gallant Prince might get you a scroll or a
1+ magical weapon, the Lifegiver quest gets you an amulet of health.
- Where is the Great Hall?
There are two Great Halls. One is a chat room outside the game, and one
is a room that may be entered through the north side of Lord Nasher's
palace. If you're looking for the one where events are held, you can get
to it from the menu on the left of the Neverwinter Forum.
- How come the game hangs on me?
Probably you are connecting during prime time (8-midnight Eastern). Try
playing another time. It also helps if you move to a low traffic region
(the father away from Neverwinter proper the better).
- How come the game hangs at "Connecting to host..."?
Found on an AOL message board...

After sitting in the lounge too many hours, keeping my favorite tiger
company, I've found that most folx can't get the game to work for the
following reasons.
Lady Ellyn's Top Ten Reasons You can't get Neverwinter Nights to Work :)
- You have a Mac.
- You're using TCP/IP to log on to AOL.
- Your modem is a Windows only modem.
- Your modem is either set to com3 or 4.
- Your modem and mouse share the same com port.
(editor's note: I find it unlikely you'll get onto AOL in the first
place with this problem.)
- You haven't downloaded the game yet.
- You downloaded game, but haven't installed it yet.
- You are running Window95 and need to run 95game.exe.
- Your modem is using Rockwell chipset and you need Rockwell chip set
drivers.
- You're too stupid to know if any of these reasons listed pertain to
you 3;>
